Mayor Barrett Approves Funding for African American Entertainment and Cultural District

Milwaukee—Mayor Barrett today signed a resolution authorizing the transfer and expenditure of $315,000 from the Development Fund for the African American Entertainment and Cultural District Commercial Redevelopment Fund. "The money approved will help the City of Milwaukee acquire properties in the area needed for the African American Entertainment and Cultural District," stated Mayor Barrett.

The African American Entertainment and Cultural District is a redevelopment project that will positively impact the economic health of an older commercial district and the residential neighborhoods in the area. This District will also create investment and employment opportunities for the community, boosting tourism and celebrating racial diversity. "Diversity is one our strongest suits as a City," said Mayor Barrett. "Our goal with this district is to create an African American cultural and entertainment hub in Milwaukee where it'll offer the best in music, art and authentic cuisine."

The African American Entertainment and Cultural District will be located on a four-block section of North Avenue between 7th Street and Martin Luther King Drive. The City of Milwaukee has partnered with several community organizations in working to make the African American Entertainment and Cultural District a reality. The community partnerships include the MLK Economic Development Corporation, Historic King Drive Business Improvement District and the ICRC.
